Iowans Urged to Use Caution While Cleaning Up Storm-Damaged Trees

Following recent storms that swept through northern Iowa, state forestry experts are urging residents to proceed carefully when cleaning up fallen and damaged trees. Emma Hanigan, urban forestry coordinator with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), emphasized the importance of wearing safety gear and avoiding loose clothing when using chainsaws.

Hannigan warns, “Tree limbs that are twisted and tangled can shift unexpectedly and bind the saw.”

For damaged oak trees, Hanigan advises applying acrylic paint or another wound dressing immediately to prevent the spread of oak wilt, a disease carried by beetles.

Once cleanup is complete, homeowners should contact a certified arborist to inspect for hidden damage. Hanigan also noted that while young, uprooted trees may be salvageable with proper staking, larger trees are less likely to survive.

Residents are encouraged to replant lost trees when safe to do so. More information is available at www.iowadnr.gov/treedisaster.
