Nearly 50 Iowa communities will observe National Night Out this week, which looks to enhance the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community.

National Night Out in Franklin County will be Tuesday at the Hampton-Dumont High School parking lot. Hampton Police Captain Mike Halsne tells RadioOnTheGo News why this annual event is important for towns big and small to host every year.

“So it’s nice to have something like this for the community to get together to come out, see what we have and kind of speak with the officers and deputies and fire department personnel and whatnot from around the county. It’s not just a Hampton event, you know, we bring in the fire departments from Bradford, Coulter, you know, Alexander’s (fire department) been there, Sheffield (fire department) comes down. It’s nice to have all those people come in and show their support for this. We get sponsors to help put this stuff on and provide the food and some of the school supplies and whatnot that are given out.”

In addition to the free school supplies, there will be bike giveaways. A free meal will be served along with demonstrations with area fire departments. There will be displays of law enforcement vehicles, ambulances and fire trucks.

The first National Night Out was held in 1984 and it’s since grown into an annual tradition that includes 17,000 communities across the country and 38-million neighbors coming together with local law enforcement

The Franklin County National Night Out is Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Hampton-Dumont High School parking lot.
