The Franklin County Board of Supervisors met Monday morning (Aug. 11) at the Law Enforcement Center in Hampton for their regular weekly session. The board approved rescheduling a public hearing on vacating a county right-of-way in Burdette to August 25 at 9 a.m. They also approved closing Yarrow Avenue between 50th and 60th Streets for culvert work and Franklin Avenue between 55th and 70th Streets for bridge construction.
A resolution was adopted to authorize monthly transfers totaling just over $247,700 from the county’s General Basic Fund, Rural Basic Fund, and Rural Supplemental Fund to the Secondary Roads Fund for fiscal year 2025-26. The board also approved naming the county auditor as the voting representative for the Iowa Communities Assurance Pool (ICAP) and approved a business associate agreement with Central Iowa Community Services (CICS).
During public comment, resident John Peterson shared his opinion that he felt the new Chief Deputy Sheriff position should have been filled from within the Sheriff’s Office. The board noted that last week they supported Sheriff Aaron Dodd’s selection of Emergency Management Coordinator Joel McWilliams for the role, and emphasized that elected officials have the discretion to hire either internal candidates or external applicants.
