Governor Kim Reynolds has officially directed 20 Iowa National Guard soldiers to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials in the state starting September 8th. According to a press release from the Governor’s office, the troops will provide administrative and logistical support, freeing ICE agents to focus on field enforcement.

This follows the story we brought you last week, when Governor Reynolds held initial talks with federal officials about Iowa’s role in immigration enforcement. The mission has now been approved through mid-November.

Meanwhile, about 1,800 Iowa National Guard members are currently deployed overseas in the Middle East, where they are providing security and stability in the region.
