A new survey from the National Federation of Independent Business shows small business optimism improved last month, with the index rising 1.7 points to 100.3—slightly above its 52-year average. NFIB Iowa State Director Matt Everson says making the 20% small business tax deduction permanent has helped boost confidence, though many owners still struggle to find qualified workers. The labor quality issue is familiar to many business owners across north-central Iowa, where restaurants, manufacturers, and service providers have reported ongoing hiring challenges. In the July survey, 21% of small-business owners said labor quality was their top concern, while 11% cited inflation.
Locally and statewide, more owners reported their business health as “good” or “excellent,” and 16% said it was a good time to expand—up from June. Still, uncertainty rose, and job openings remain above the long-term average. NFIB says the next six months will be key as owners watch the economy, trade policy, and hiring trends.
