The Aplington-Parkersburg girls tennis team earned a 7-2 home win over Hampton-Dumont-CAL Thursday.

The Falcons won five singles matches, including Jayden Krausman at #1, Megan Bruns at #2, Holly Haugstad at #4, Kate Livingood at #5 and Amy Mulder at #6. Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s Jade Johnson won at #3.

AP won two doubles matches, including Krausman/Bruns at #1 and Haugstad/Mulder at #3. Johnson/Yesi Valenzuela won for the Bulldogs at #2. AP coach Haley Schneiderman says it was a good bounce-back from two lopsided losses earlier in the week.

“We have a lot of new girls on varsity this year, so it’s just getting them to learn new different mindset, just getting more consistent with their shots, things like that,” Schneiderman says. “A lot of people were looking a lot more consistent today, which is great. Jayden and Megan worked on some net stuff in doubles, and they were both playing up at the net, versus having one up, one back. So that was good to see. I hope they keep doing that moving forward. But yeah, hopefully this will set us up well for the rest of the season.”

Each of Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s wins were by 9-7 scores. AP gave up no more than two games in their wins, including four 8-0 sweeps. HDCAL coach Chad Johnson says despite some unfavorable results, the team has put itself in position to compete in the first two meets of the season.

“You look at the score and it’s 9-0 or whatever and then we lose 7-2, 8-1, things like that, but the games are really much closer than that,” Johnson says. “We have a lot of deuces we go to, or maybe it’s 30-40 and stuff like that, so our girls are right there. They keep fighting and they just keep improving, so hopefully we can continue to do that.”

In their next action, AP will host Waverly-Shell Rock Friday at 3:00. Hampton-Dumont-CAL will host Charles City Tuesday for their home opener.
