This week, one of our guests on the Newsmaker podcast included organizers of the “Helping Hands of Ackley” volunteer group. Cindy Arends and Carolyn Peterson visited with Mitch Williams during Wednesday’s edition of the program. The volunteers say they’re inviting more residents to join their efforts to beautify and improve the community. Formed last October, Arends explains how the group started and ideas formed to tackle a variety of projects.

Recent work includes renovating the interior of the community shelter with fresh paint and new fans and lights, assisting residents during Ackley’s junk day by hauling items to the compost site, and cleaning uptown planting areas.

The group meets the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. to prioritize projects based on community suggestions gathered through feedback boxes placed around town. Organizers tell RadioOnTheGo News the city has been supportive.

The group says they’re also accepting donations to help offset costs of their efforts.  Those donations can be made to the Helping Hands of Ackley account at GNB Bank. More details are on the group’s Facebook page — again, that’s Helping Hands of Ackley.
