La Luz Centro Cultural will be offering a 10-week U.S. Citizenship class starting September 2 in Hampton. Classes will meet twice a week in English to help permanent residents prepare for their naturalization interview after filing the Form N-400 Application for Naturalization.

Valeria Gonzalez, the part-time Department of Justice representative at La Luz, facilitates limited immigration services for the organization. The course will be taught by Ashley Wilkinson through North Iowa Area Community College Continuing Education and funded by an Interest on Lawyers’ Trust Accounts grant from the Iowa Supreme Court. Students will learn about the pathway to citizenship, review U.S. history and civics, study the 100 official citizenship questions, practice English skills, and rehearse the Oath of Allegiance.

La Luz also offers English as a Second Language support for students with limited English or who want extra practice, helping ensure success in the citizenship class. Local resources on voter registration and applying for a U.S. passport will be provided. La Luz Centro Cultural is a nonprofit organization accredited through the U.S. Department of Justice.
