Scattered severe thunderstorms moved across northern Iowa Friday afternoon, bringing strong winds and downed trees to multiple communities. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued for Cerro Gordo, Franklin, Hardin, and Wright counties shortly after 2 p.m., and similar conditions occurred in Bremer and Butler counties shortly before 3 p.m. where gusts reached up to 60 mph.
In Hampton, a tree fell onto a power line at the corner of 1st Street NE and 7th Avenue NE, causing a temporary outage for some MidAmerican Energy customers. MidAmerican reported nearly 700 customers without power during that time. Drivers in the area were also reported to be pulling to the side of the road to wait out torrential rains.
Forecasters say the threat may not be over, as additional storms are possible throughout the weekend, especially near the Iowa-Minnesota border, with dangerous heat also a threat as heat indices potentially exceed 100 degrees.
