The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football team enters the 2025 season looking to build on lessons learned from last fall’s 2-7 campaign. Head Coach Caleb Vogel says the offseason was about focusing on internal development rather than loading up the schedule with 7-on-7 camps.
“We went away from going to 7-on-7 this year,” Vogel says. “We needed to fix things in-house, so we decided to do a bunch of installs at our own place. And then we went down to Central’s Camp. We’ve been going out the last few years, and so that’s where we went this year. And it was good to see the new kids that we have getting out there and competing. And we invited freshmen this year to come with us, and they’re getting after it. It was good to kind of have that little bit of a break in the middle of summer from our own place to go down there and compete with other teams.”
The Cowboys return JD Morrical who threw for 512 yards and 3 passing touchdowns along with rushing for 326 yards and 4 touchdowns. The Cowboys will also return Selvin Gonzalez at running back who ran for 698 yards and had 4 touchdowns. Huxley Lingenfelter returns this season after finishing last year with 299 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns. Lingenfelter also led last year’s team with 39 solo tackles. Charlie Campbell is also back in the lineup after rushing for 4 touchdowns last season and having 23 solo tackles. On the offensive and defensive line, the Cowboys return some experience with JT Kelso. Vogel says he feels good about leadership as the Cowboys return several key upperclassmen from last year’s roster.
“Selvin Gonzalez is our true senior leader that we’re going to have on the field this year. I think he’s starting to understand what it is to be a leader. I don’t know if it’s just because he’s senior, but he’s stepped up big time. You’ve got guys like Huxley and Charlie and JD and JT. Those guys have been around for a year or two now, and they’re kind of seeing what this program has been and what it takes to win. So we lean on those guys big time to pick everybody up and to carry them on their back when times get tough. Those guys are doing a tremendous job.”
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows opens up its season at home on August 29 against Belmond-Klemme.
