Extra Day Added to Alden Days Celebration as City Council Reviews City Rates and Rentals

The Alden City Council approved a 4% increase in water and sewer rates during its meeting Monday, citing rising maintenance costs and recommendations from both the county auditor and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The rate hike will go into effect after official publication requirements are met.

In other business, the council approved a request from the Alden Days Committee to add a Thursday night kick-off concert to the 2026 celebration. Organizer Sarah Theisen reported an additional $6,000 in sponsorships, including a $5,000 donation from POET and $1,000 from Humes Distributing. Performers scheduled include Jordan Beem, Derek Randall, Jake McVay and Cody Webb.

The Alden City Council raised rental fees for the Alden Legion Community Center to $500, with an additional $100 for the extra day of Thursday and cleaning fees. The rate will go into effect June 1st, 2026.

The council also approved new pool pass rates for the 2026 season. Council member Mark Oliver proposed raising the family pass to $100 and the single season pass to $70, while keeping the senior pass at $50. The adult daily rate will increase to $5, and the children’s daily rate will remain at $3.

Concerns about nuisance properties were also addressed, with multiple certified letters to be sent to residents who have failed to maintain their properties. Council members emphasized the city’s commitment to upkeep and safety.
