Sheffield’s People in the Park celebration is Saturday with a variety of events planned at city park. The day starts with the Sheffield Library Foundation omelet breakfast from 7:00 to 10:00 a.m., the biggest annual fundraiser for the organization.
“Our library foundation is, I feel like, an underappreciated resource that people don’t always know it’s behind the scenes doing its job. Our beautiful landscaping is thanks to them. They all take care of that and we have volunteer days where they come and weed it and keep it looking so nice as it is. It also just funds just general upkeep of the library building. We had a lot of updates this past winter thanks to the Barkema Trust as well. We put in a lot of new flooring and updated our bathrooms and the foundation helped with that as well.”
That’s Sheffield Library Director Morgan Symens. There will be a vendor show and food trucks in the park starting at 11:00 a.m. Saturday. The parade will begin at 11:00 and will feature Gail Lacey with The Sharing Shoppe as the grand marshal, and Dave and Carol Stadtlander, who were named the city’s outstanding citizens.
“I like the friendliness of Sheffield. I know you kind of have to drive through town and wave at everybody because if you don’t know them, you might know them. So I mean, it’s a friendly town. I like getting out and we can walk the dog. We can go for a bicycle ride. We can do several things and, neighbors are neighbors and, friends are friends.”
That’s Dave Stadtlander, who stays busy with transportation at the Sheffield Care Center. His wife Carol continues to volunteer her time at church and also volunteered at the care center in the past.
Longtime Sheffield resident Jon Schmidt was awarded the city’s 2025 People in the Park CC Gilman Award. The award is given to a citizen who has lived in or around Sheffield for many years and contributed to the betterment of the town and its citizens. Schmidt will be recognized during the dignitaries and royalty presentation Saturday after the parade.
Other activities Saturday include the Sheffield Community Club free-will donation meal from noon to 1:30 p.m. and kid’s carnival games and activities in the park in the afternoon. You can find out more about this year’s celebration Friday with interviews on 104.9 KLMJ from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.
