Today (Monday, Aug. 25) marks the start of the filing period for candidates running in this fall’s city and school elections across Iowa. Voters will head to the polls in November to decide on a range of local offices, including mayor, city council, and school board seats.
Officials say these local races often have some of the biggest impacts on day-to-day life, shaping decisions about schools, public safety, and community development. Along with office holders, some ballots may also include local measures such as bond referendums for residents to consider.
While attention is already on next year’s big-ticket races, from the U.S. Senate to Iowa’s governor’s race, this fall’s elections serve as a reminder that these local offices and local decisions shape the direction of small, rural communities like those in our broadcast area.
More information about the 2025 city and school elections can be found by contacting their county auditor directly, or by visiting the Iowa Secretary of State’s website. If you plan to run for one of these offices, let us know by emailing news@radioonthego.com.
