Democratic candidate for Iowa Secretary of State Ryan Peterman is speaking out after President Trump recently called for ending mail-in voting. Peterman, a former Naval officer, says he himself relied on absentee ballots while serving in the military. He points to the more than 680,000 Iowans who voted by mail in 2024 — including elderly residents, college students, and members of the armed forces — and says voting by mail is a safe and common practice used across party lines.

Peterman is urging current Secretary of State Paul Pate to join him in rejecting Trump’s proposal, calling it an attack on the right to vote. Peterman says his campaign for Secretary of State is focused on providing nonpartisan leadership and ensuring every eligible Iowan has free and fair access to the ballot box.
