The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office responded to an accident shortly after 5:30 p.m. Monday (Aug. 25) on County Road C13 or 250th Street, west of Sheffield at the Interstate 35 overpass.
According to authorities, Mauricio Cornejo Chavez of Houston, Texas, was driving a 1999 Sterling commercial truck when the raised box on the vehicle struck the underside of the overpass. Chavez was transported by Franklin General Ambulance to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City for evaluation of possible injuries.
Chavez was cited for no valid commercial driver’s license, excessive height, and failure to provide proof of financial liability coverage. At this time, officials say they are unsure of the extent of damage, if any, to the overpass.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Franklin General Ambulance.
