The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football team scored their most points in a game since August 30, 2024 en route to a 44-30 win over Wright County rival Belmond-Klemme in their season opener on Friday. It was the first meeting between the teams since 2022 and the Cowboys second straight win in the series.

The Cowboys had six rushing touchdowns in the win. Joel Meier had three rushing touchdowns. Colin Sesker had two rushing touchdowns. Charlie Campbell made one trip to the house. Cowboys Head Coach Caleb Vogel on the success of a rushing attack by committee.

“It starts with our offensive line up front. Our backs couldn’t have had a good game if it wasn’t for our offensive line. Every single one of them blocked to the whistle. They just got after it. The preparation that we had all week was tremendous,” says Vogel. “Charlie went down in the first quarter, then we had guys step up. Our foreign exchange student Joel had a heck of a game last night, number five. Selvin ran the ball well and Colin Sesker ran the ball well. J.D. took command of the offense. Those guys are truly stepping up and excited to be here with them.”

The Broncos offense was fueled by an air attack on Friday night. Brody Heifner had a school record 392 passing yards and four touchdowns. Braden Dougherty 13 receptions for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Kysen Lamb had 12 receptions for 157 yards. Broncos Head Coach Josh Faaborg on the record performances.

“He’s worked extremely hard to get to where he’s at. A very gifted young man as well. Very proud of Brody. Definitely had a huge performance and executed really well. He is the leader of the offense and commanded things really well. The only thing that really matters is the win and loss column and that’s the way he treats it too,” says Faaborg. “Excited for Braden. A big night, where he took advantage of the explosive play opportunities. Kysen Lamb, had 12 catches for over 100 yards. They’re out on our edge and we took what Clarion was giving us.”

Belmond-Klemme will host Newman Catholic and CGD will travel to Hampton-Dumont-CAL for Week 2.
