The Hampton-Dumont-CAL football team will look to bounce back from a season-opening loss to Osage when it hosts Clarion-Goldfield-Dows for a non-district game Friday.

The Bulldogs were held out of the end zone until the fourth quarter last week, and were held to just 112 yards on offense. Head Coach Cole Miller says having a better run game is crucial, and they’ll look to build on some glimmers of hope found in the fourth quarter.

“We struggled in the run game last week, especially early on,” Miller says. “We just made a lot of mistakes that we hadn’t made up until the first game. We just didn’t do as well up front as we were hoping to do. So I’m looking forward to those guys bouncing back and having a much better day on the ground. And then we were kind of able to get the pass game going towards the end of the game. So we want to kind of ride that momentum and keep that going for us, make sure that that stays strong. We held them scoreless in the second half, and we were able to put points up on the board in the second half. So we want to build that momentum that we had towards the end of the game and just keep that going this week.”

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows defeated Belmond-Klemme 44-30 last week, where they racked up 542 rushing yards with no pass completions. Head Coach Caleb Vogel says locking down on defense will be crucial after giving up over 400 yards through the air last week.

“We need to clean some things up on the back end,” Vogel says. “On the defensive line, we need to create a little more pressure. But just continue to be a hard-nosed defense and be aggressive and fight for the ball and, just have fun doing it.”

The Bulldogs have won five straight in the series, including 35-7 last year. The kickoff will be at 7:00 p.m.
