A house built by Hawkeye Community College students will be showcased in next weekend’s Cedar Valley Parade of Homes. The four-bedroom, three-bath ranch-style home located on West 7th Street in Waterloo is a Net Zero house—which means it’s designed to produce as much energy as it consumes. Built by students in Hawkeye’s Sustainable Construction and Design program, the project uses insulating concrete forms, solar panels, Pella triple-pane windows, and high R-value insulation. Features that make the home better at keeping heat in during the winter and out during the summer, lowering energy costs and improving comfort.
Hawkeye was the first community college in the nation to earn the U.S. Department of Energy’s Zero Energy Design designation, awarded in 2022.
The Cedar Valley Parade of Homes runs Friday, September 12, from 5 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, September 13, from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets are available through the Cedar Valley Home Builders Association website; click here: https://cedarvalleyhomebuilders.com/product/parade2025/
