The Grundy Center football team took care of business in Friday’s 41-7 Week 2 win at Columbus Catholic.
In a characteristically thorough performance, the Spartans left no doubt. They scored on six of the first seven drives, and the defense held strong until giving up a late touchdown with the bench emptied. Judd Jirovsky found Eli Wegmann for a 22-yard touchdown pass to get the scoring underway. Later in the first quarter, Pete Lebo had touchdown runs of 53 yards and one yard for a three-score lead. Lebo added a third rushing touchdown in the second quarter, and Hayden Geerdes ran one in, putting the running clock rule into effect before halftime with a 35-0 lead.
To begin the second half, Geerdes ran in from 38 yards out for the team’s final score, and they cruised to the win with backups in the game.
“I felt like we were a much more efficient team compared to last week against AP,” Head Coach Travis Zajac says. “We took advantage of all of our opportunities when we did possess the ball in the first half, save for that last possession. Our defense played some really good football. I think we were really focused on our pad level on the line of scrimmage. After Week 1, we were playing pretty high and getting moved around. I feel like we were better at that against Columbus. I think we’re a better football team in Week 2 than we were in Week 1, and that’s all you can really ask for this early in the season.”
Jirovsky was 8/8 passing for 158 yards and a score. Lebo had 10 carries for 94 yards and three scores. Aiden Betts and Cooper Keller each led defensively with six tackles.
The Spartans (2-0) will return to action by traveling to Dike-New Hartford in Week 3.
