This year’s Franklin County Relay for Life is Saturday at the Franklin Wellness Center in Hampton from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Survivor registration and the 50/50 raffle both begin at 11:30 a.m.
At 12:30, the national anthem will be performed by 2025 Hampton-Dumont-CAL graduate, Shakira Vela Maza, with a prayer and a message to follow from Father Kevin Earleywine of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Hampton. The survivors lap around the track will start at 12:40 with the caregivers joining on the second lap and the rest of attendees joining on the third lap.
This year’s honorary chair is Oz Guerrero. Oz passed away in August at the age of five after a nearly two-year battle with liver cancer that eventually spread to his lungs. He will be represented by his parents, Dave Guerrero and Whittney Hubert.
One of Oz’s favorite things in life was superheroes, and during this year’s relay for life, participants are asked to join the event in costume.
“We will also be having Iowa League of Heroes that will be joining us dressed in superhero from 12:30 to 1:30. They will have Captain Carter and Captain America with us. And then Team of Legends also will be there from 11:30 to about two o’clock and they’re sending Spider-Man and Superman. So I am encouraging all people; child, adult, please come out dressed in your favorite superhero outfit. That can be a superhero. It can be your mom. It can be your dad. I don’t care who it is, come out dressed as your favorite hero.”
That’s Franklin County Relay for Life Event Chair, Lisa Rodriguez. The luminaria ceremony is at 3:30 p.m.
Ahead of Saturday’s events, RadioOnTheGo’s Relay for Life Radio-thon continues through Thursday at 5:00 p.m. During this time, you can call in your pledges at 641-456-5656 to support the Franklin County Relay for Life, the Butler County Relay for Life or to make a general contribution to the American Cancer Society.
