Belmond-Klemme schools briefly went into a shelter-in-place Tuesday, September 9, 2025, after reports of people in the community claiming to be Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, agents. According to KCCI News, school officials say students and staff were kept safe while authorities investigated.
Wright County Sheriff Jason Schluttenhofer told the Des Moines television station that the individuals were actually Department of Homeland Security investigators conducting welfare checks on minors placed with sponsors years ago. The initiative, which began earlier this year, is designed to ensure unaccompanied children are safe and properly cared for.
Superintendent Jen Peter also spoke with KCCI, saying the shelter-in-place allowed the school day to continue without incident, providing reassurance to families. The district serves about 600 students, roughly 35% of whom are Latino.
The Department of Homeland Security emphasized that ICE does not raid or target schools. For more details, links to the original sources are available at RadioOnTheGo.com.
