The South Hardin Tigers football team is off to a 2-0 start after non-district wins against Iowa Falls-Alden and West Marshall.
The Tigers’ offense is picking up where it left off last season, when it averaged 35 points per game. A key factor this season has been the passing game. Through the first two weeks, senior quarterback Peyton Welch has thrown for 338 yards, while receiver Sam Benson has totaled 234 yards and three touchdowns. Head Coach Nick Eller attributes the pair’s success to knowing each other’s tendencies.
“Those two just have a connection. They’ve played together since they were little and there’s nothing I’m doing special. It’s just trying to find the right match up at the right time and get the right coverage for Sam to go and Peyton see it too. So really fun to see them connect every week that you know, I want to see him connect and see some long throws. People enjoy watching that more than watching just run game all the time. So really proud of them. They just seem to have a knack, kind of a knack of where they are and they missed each other a couple times tonight so they could have a lot more but, really, really fun to see them connect and they just kind of have a nose for where each other is going to be.”
Defensively, South Hardin has allowed just seven points all season. The Tigers have combined for 11 tackles for loss, with junior Manning Pfantz accounting for four.
South Hardin will host Hudson in Week 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Friday in Eldora.
