A Hampton man has been sentenced to more than a year in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States after multiple deportations. 39-year-old Fabian Arias-Ramirez, a Mexican citizen, pleaded guilty in June to reentering the U.S. without permission after being previously removed. He was sentenced this week in Cedar Rapids to twelve months and one day in federal prison.

Arias-Ramirez was first ordered removed in 2013 but wasn’t deported until 2019. Since then, he’s been caught trying to reenter the country multiple times. Most recently, he was found in Iowa Falls in April after checking in with his probation officer following a second drunk driving conviction.

In total, Arias-Ramirez has two federal immigration-related convictions and two state convictions for Operating While Intoxicated, along with a criminal mischief charge. His case was prosecuted under Operation Take Back America, a nationwide effort by the Department of Justice to combat illegal immigration and related criminal activity.

Arias-Ramirez will serve a one-year term of supervised release after completing his prison sentence. There is no parole in the federal system.
