Falcon Football to host Garner Hayfield Ventura for non-district finale

The Aplington-Parkersburg football team will look to close non-district play on a high note when it hosts Garner Hayfield Ventura Friday.

The Falcons (0-2) are coming off last week’s 7-0 home loss to Dike-New Hartford, where a third quarter touchdown given up was the difference in an otherwise competitive game. While the Falcons have moved the ball rather effectively on offense, they’ve been marred by costly mistakes, especially penalties and turnovers. Head Coach Jeff Pikna says it’s nothing that can’t be fixed, and he looks forward to seeing what the team can accomplish.

“It just seems like back to back weeks, we’re doing a lot of things that take ourselves out of the game,” Pikna says. “Which first season, we’ve only been together for five months. We’ve only been running football for two. So you’re going to have stuff like that. And we understand that. So we don’t take it too personally and take it too hard on them. But it’s stuff like that that if we get fixed, it could be a really good thing.”

Garner Hayfield Ventura (0-2) has lost consecutive games in blowout fashion to Osage and West Hancock. They’re working through some growing pains with many underclassmen, including some freshmen, making varsity contributions.

The Falcons are 6-0 all-time in the series, with the last meetings happening in the 2010-2011 district cycle. The kickoff will be at 7:00 p.m. at Ed Thomas Field.
