Cycling is bringing big dollars into Iowa communities, according to a new study from the Iowa Bicycle Coalition.

The Economic Impacts of Cycling and Trails Study shows recreational cycling happens in every county, including rural areas. Even the smallest counties are seeing more than half a million dollars in annual impact, while larger counties such as Black Hawk and Dallas report more than $25 million each.

The study found that 40 percent of recreational cyclists ride at least twice a month, supporting local businesses like restaurants, repair shops, and lodging.

Local examples include the Prairie Rock Trails mountain bike park in Mason City, funded through a $4.5 million Destination Iowa grant, which has already boosted recreation and tourism in North Iowa.

The coalition says outdoor recreation is a major driver of jobs, workforce development, and quality of life across the region.
