The Franklin County Relay for Life was held Saturday, September 13th, at the Franklin Wellness Center in Hampton. Organizers say preliminary fundraising totals now stand at just under $53,000, with additional donations still being counted.
This year’s honorary chair was the late Ozrael “Oz” Guerrero, a five-year-old who lost his battle with cancer just last month. His mother, Whitney Hubert, said it was a meaningful tribute for their family.
“And for us to be the honorary family for Relay was such an honor. And Oz was just so absolutely special. He was such a special boy and he touched so many people. And like Dave said, you know, we both want to continue to keep talking about Oz’s real story because he had such an impact on so many people.”
In tribute to Oz, the event featured volunteers from the Iowa League of Heroes in full costume as characters such as Superman and Batman, and event chair Lisa Rodriguez donning the costume of Wonder Woman. The event also featured the traditional survivor lap and luminaria ceremony, as participants, caregivers, and community members gathered to honor and remember those touched by cancer.
Funds raised support the American Cancer Society’s mission of research, education, advocacy, and patient services, ensuring the impact of this year’s Relay extends far beyond Franklin County.
