Girls tennis players across Iowa will compete in individual state qualifying meets Wednesday.
Aplington-Parkersburg and Dike-New Hartford will compete at Byrnes Park in Waterloo. AP assistant coach Grant Wedeking says playing strategically is crucial in postseason matches.
“We need to work on different skills, different strategies,” Wedeking says. “At this point, when the girls against you are in certain spots on the court, how do we attack this? That’s what you need to have in your skill set going into something like individual regionals. We saw a lot of things at the conference meet that give us confidence and maybe some ideas about how we might play things. But we’re looking forward to this important postseason stuff.”
With returning state qualifiers Addy Joslin and Lauren Muller in doubles, DNH coach Reegan Zinkula says the team is carrying the momentum of a conference championship.
“It’s kind of a long break for them, so I’m hoping we can carry this all the way over to Wednesday,” Zinkula says. “I think we have the momentum and we have the skill. Hopefully we can bring that confidence and show up and be ready to play.”
Grundy Center, Hampton-Dumont-CAL and Iowa Falls-Alden will each compete at the state qualifying meet at Grinnell.
Each team may enter up to two singles players and two doubles pairs. Each individual may play singles or doubles, but not both. The top two placewinners in each bracket will advance to the state tournament.
Action statewide will start at 9:00 a.m.
