The Hampton-Dumont-CAL volleyball team began the season with a week between each of its first three matches. It’s currently in the final such stretch before matches become more frequent during the second half of the season.
At 2-4, the Bulldogs have had their share of highs and lows, with all three best-of-five matches going the distance. They’re 1-2 in those matches. Head Coach Sarah Miller says the team needs to maintain energy found in a Set 4 comeback against Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.
“It’s when we lose that fire, we had that energy, we had that fire towards the end of that set four, and it was just one point at a time, and they were celebrating big,” Miller says. “There were points in the night where we weren’t even celebrating the good things that we were doing, and then that’s gonna hurt us. So we’ve gotta make sure that we’re celebrating big like we did in the set four, and just really be growing off of that momentum and letting us gain our confidence when we’re doing that.”
Among the top performers, junior outside hitter Madison Heilskov leads the team and is tied for second in the North Central Conference with three kills per set. Maren Subbert averages one block per set, the second-best in the league.
In their next action, they’ll take part in a tournament at Nashua-Plainfield Saturday. They’ll resume conference play by hosting Webster City on Tuesday, September 23.
