Cadet Football traveling to Boone for non-district finale

The Iowa Falls-Alden football team will close non-district play when it travels to Boone Friday. It’ll be the first meeting since 2017.

The Cadets (1-2) are coming off last week’s 36-13 win over Hampton-Dumont-CAL, which was a crucial turning point, according to Head Coach Eric Walkingstick.

“We’re going to build on what we did against Hampton-Dumont-CAL,” Walkingstick says. “We’re going to find that success. We’re going to understand that that’s how we get there. And we finally saw that. We finally saw what we can do, what we can become for the first time on their own. Our juniors took a huge step to take that leadership role. We don’t have a lot of seniors out there. So a lot of weight’s been pushed on our juniors to step up. You talk about pivotal points in time and history, this is a pivotal point for us this year and in the future. So as we go in the district play, we want to feel good.”

Walkingstick credits junior receiver/defensive back Cade Olberding, who had a big night last week, including a pick six.

“Cade Olberding is that kind of player. He is a special player and he is a guy who is a difference maker. He’s one those kids that you find and you make plays around him, and you don’t hide him because he is special. And he came out tonight and had a tremendous night, both offensively and defensively, and special teams. And the thing is, he was cramping, he wouldn’t come off the field. And he kept coming out even though he was cramping. And he did such a great job, proud of that young man.”

Boone (1-2) is a Class 4A opponent, which is coming off a 28-6 loss at Gilbert last week, where they gave up 28 unanswered points. The Cadets will look to slow down running back Maddox McIntyre, who averages over 100 yards per game.

It’ll start at 7:00 p.m. at Goeppinger Field.
