Grundy Center to begin district play by hosting GHV

The Grundy Center football team will bring its 42-game win streak into district play when it hosts Garner Hayfield Ventura in Friday’s district opener.

The Spartans (3-0) are coming off a 35-7 win at Dike-New Hartford last week, where they pulled out to a five-score lead and put the running clock rule in effect before giving up a late touchdown. Head Coach Travis Zajac says the team is following the same plan it has had in place for the last several years in order to continually progress through the season.

“We start and it looks a certain way, and then, a handful of games in, the product looks a lot different on film already in the positive,” Zajac says. “And that’s the case with this group. We’re going to continue to do that. We try to be very blunt with our kids. And we start early on as they go. We’ve got a pretty good plan in place here. We’ve got a good roadmap to success, and all we’re going to ask you to do is just follow, do what you need to do, listen to your coaches, be there for your teammates. And we’re going to continue to develop you and we’re going to be able to reach our potential if we can do that. And I think these kids are ready, rearing and willing to do that as we move into district play.”

The Cardinals (0-3) were outmatched in each non-district game, with each game being sent to the running clock rule. They were held to just 89 yards in last week’s 53-0 loss at Aplington-Parkersburg.

It’ll start at 7:00 p.m.
