Coming off their first win of the season, the Aplington-Parkersburg football team will begin district play Friday at undefeated Union. It’ll air on RadioOnTheGo’s YouTube channel.
The Falcons (1-2) are coming off last week’s 53-0 win over Garner Hayfield Ventura, where they racked up 414 rushing yards in an overpowering performance. Head Coach Jeff Pikna says the run game will continue to be a focal point.
“That’s been the type of play I push,” Pikna says. “I think it’s the most disciplined. With how serious we take weight room and mental toughness and what we practice all week, it kind of exemplifies our skills and our assets and the things that we want to get done every day, running downhill and running between the guards and stuff like that. That’s just kind of the ball I’ve always been used to coaching, always used to playing and these guys, with the backs we have and linemen getting a little more experience, it seems to be working out pretty well. So we’ll continue to build on what we’ve done to this point.”
Mason Pruisner rushed for 165 yards and Benny Waller for 151, each recording three touchdowns.
Union (3-0) is coming off last week’s 52-20 win over Oelwein, where they had nearly 500 yards. Pikna says they’ll need to defend an efficient offense.
“The thing that sticks out is they have a really good quarterback, accounts for almost all their rushing yards and is a very efficient passer, but makes very little mistakes. So really trying to key on that and trying to make sure that we’re able to contain that by the kind of defense we play, and then also how we’re going to move and control the ball and offense kind of like we’ve been doing all year. So we’re not going really change too much of what we’ve been doing.”
Coverage will start at 6:15 p.m., followed by the kickoff at 7:00.
