Wolverines hosting Oelwein for district opener Friday

The Dike-New Hartford football team will begin its district schedule by hosting Oelwein Friday.

The Wolverines (2-1) are coming off last week’s 35-7 loss to Grundy Center, where they couldn’t generate much offense until a fourth quarter score. As the team continues to develop and form its identity, Head Coach Don Betts believes they have a chance to be among the frontrunners as they put non-district play in the rearview mirror.

“I think our district is wide open,” Betts says. “There are a lot of people that have an opportunity in this district to make some noise. And I think we’re one of those teams. I think that we’ve grown from where we started this season. We maybe haven’t grown as quickly as we wanted to. And we still have some growth we have to do. But we’ve got a great opportunity. And I think our kids will their heads up and keep plugging away and keep working. And if we’re able to do that, I think we can be very competitive in this district this year.”

Oelwein (0-3) is coming off a 52-20 loss to Union last week, which was their most competitive game so far. They’ve rushed for just 61 yards, averaging less than one yard per carry.

The kickoff will be at 7:00 p.m. at Gunderson Sports Complex.
