The AGWSR volleyball team battled many momentum swings, and defeated South Hardin 3-1 Tuesday, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ and RadioOnTheGo’s YouTube channel. The set scores were 25-17, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22.
Leading most of the way, the Cougars used strong serving to finish off the first set. In set 2, the momentum swung many times. AGWSR led 8-1 to begin the set, but it slipped away. After South Hardin held a 19-16 lead, the Cougars came back with some crucial blocks and heroic rallies.
The Tigers gained an advantage in set 3, but the Cougars scored three straight at set point to put the pressure on. In set 4, the Cougars connected on more service aces to pull away and win the match.
“Our energy kind of went in waves tonight,” senior Brylea Metzgar says. “Once we were like ‘last home game guys, let’s give it our all.’ This is it. This is it for some of us. And we pedaled to the metal”
“We talk about every practice, just giving 110 percent no matter what happens,” senior Claire Culver says. “We knew that we were just going to give it our all no matter the outcome. And we really came out and showed up. And I was really proud of everybody.”
Head Coach Kayla Miller says the team bounced back in set 4 for a commanding win.
“Set three, we were just not quick enough with our block,” Miller says. “Our block was not there. Just telling them, hey, let’s get quicker. Let’s move our feet. Let’s get under it. Let’s pop up and let’s press. So just reminding them that we need to press the ball. We need to be quick. We need to get up. Then it really showed. They weren’t really hitting on us after that. They knew we were going to block them. So just being ready for all those tips. They weren’t hit in line. So be on your toes. Be ready. And that was just a good reminder for them. And they were able to accomplish that in set four.”
In their next action, AGWSR will be at #10 (1A) Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Tuesday, September 30. South Hardin will be at a tournament at Roland-Story on Monday, September 29.
