The Iowa Falls-Alden football team will bring a two-game win streak into Friday’s 3A District 2 opener. They’ll host perennial power West Delaware in the first meeting in program history.
The Cadets (2-2) have won consecutive games over Hampton-Dumont-CAL and Boone. Last week, a fourth quarter touchdown and two-point conversion was the difference in the non-district finale. They’ve been versatile offensively, using the passing game as a key weapon against Boone and the run game as the primary option against Hampton-Dumont-CAL. Head Coach Eric Walkingstick says this week’s opponent is familiar, having gone head-to-head in team camps during the summer.
“They’ve got a little balance of everything,” Walkingstick says. “And I will say this, there was no love lost between the two teams. We did not get along and we’re probably not best friends with them. They’re not really fond of us. And when we were at camp, they just kept saying, ‘Oh, you guys are a 2-7 team,’ We went toe to toe and went back and forth, and it should make up for a good football game. When we saw them at camp, it was a little more than what you would see at camp. It was just a very high spirited type game.”
West Delaware (4-0) began the season with three dominant wins, and defeated defending 3A champion Wahlert Catholic 27-20 last week. They rushed for nearly 300 yards that night, and have racked up over 1,200 rushing yards on the season. They haven’t been efficient in passing situations, completing only 50 percent on the season.
It’ll start at 7:30 p.m. at Cadet Field.
