The Aplington-Parkersburg football team will go for its first district win when it hosts Sumner-Fredericksburg Friday, which’ll also be the Homecoming game.
The Falcons (1-3, 0-1 1A-4) are coming off last week’s 25-7 loss at Union, where several mistakes added up to an ugly finish. Head Coach Jeff Pikna says he has no doubt the team has the right mindset to bounce back.
“I can promise you right now that this team is not going to fold after one loss,” Pikna says. “They went through a heck of a time last year, obviously. We have a lot of games ahead of us. Could still very well finish in the top at least two, three, get to the playoffs, which is ultimately the goal. So if we respond the way that we’ve been preaching since April, there’s going to be a lot of guys that take over this team and don’t allow that to happen ever again.”
They’ll look to build on a game where they rushed for 245 yards, including Mason Pruisner’s 156 yards, which was his second straight 100-plus yard performance. However, four turnovers proved costly in a three-score game.
Sumner-Fredericksburg (0-4, 0-1 1A-4) has been beaten by multiple scores in each game. Last week, they held close with Hudson before giving up two fourth quarter touchdowns in a 28-6 loss. A nearly exclusive running team, they’ve completed zero of four pass attempts on the season. Three backs have rushed for over 200 yards, led by Jase Jones with 277.
It’ll start at 7:00 p.m. at Ed Thomas Field.
