Des Moines public schools superintendent Ian Roberts has resigned as he fights his deportation. The Des Moines school board gave Roberts until noon today (Tuesday) to provide documents proving he is eligible to work in the U-S or he’d be fired. Roberts released a resignation letter and said he did not want to distract the focus on educating the district’s students. A federal judge issued a deportation order for Roberts in May of 2024 and an appeal to reopen his case was rejected earlier this year. Des Moines Attorney Alfredo Parrish, who is representing Roberts, says the Texas attorney who handled the appeal sent Roberts a letter saying the case had reached a successful resolution in April — and Roberts thought everything was O.K. and his immigration case had been resolved.
