Wolverines, Norsemen battling for district lead Friday

dnh-2

First place in 2A District 4 will be on the line Friday when Dike-New Hartford travels to Roland-Story. Both teams are 2-0 in district play, and the winner will have the inside track to guaranteed homefield advantage in the first two rounds of the playoffs.

The Wolverines grinded out a 21-6 win at Denver last week, where Peyton Pokorny ran and threw for a touchdown while the defense held the Cyclones in check.

Roland-Story needed a fourth quarter touchdown to secure a 21-14 win at Vinton-Shellsburg last week. That night, as has been the case all season, was characterized by a balanced attack both on the ground and through the air. DNH coach Don Betts expects to be tested by Roland-Story’s passing attack; Luke Thoreson’s 35 receptions are the second-most in 2A, representing a deep threat by averaging over 15 yards per catch.

“I think that we match up pretty well with them, at least on paper,” Betts says. “Excited to see what we can do. It’s a long road trip for our guys and we haven’t had any long road trips so far. We’re going to have to be on top of our game in terms of our secondary. We’re going to get tested a lot. And they have the ability to run the football too. They get you thinking pass and then they run the football on you.”

It’ll be the first meeting since the 2016-2017 district cycle. The kickoff will be at 7:00 p.m.
