Governor Kim Reynolds has issued a disaster proclamation for Calhoun County after a confirmed case of highly pathogenic avian influenza, or HPAI, was found in a commercial turkey flock. The proclamation is effective immediately and runs through November 1st. Calhoun County is located in west-central Iowa, northwest of Fort Dodge.
The declaration activates state support from Iowa Homeland Security, the Department of Agriculture, and other agencies to help with rapid detection, containment, and cleanup efforts. It also temporarily waives certain regulations for commercial vehicles assisting in the response.
Officials stress that the current HPAI cases do not pose a public health risk, and poultry products remain safe to eat. Producers are urged to report any signs of illness in flocks to their veterinarian right away.
