October is National Cooperative Month, and electric cooperatives across the area are marking the occasion under the theme “Powered by Purpose.” Local co-ops—including Franklin REC, Butler County REC, Grundy County REC, Prairie Energy Cooperative, and Midland Power Cooperative—are member-owned. Unlike investor-owned utilities, these co-ops are governed by the people they serve, with decisions made locally to support reliability, affordability, and long-term sustainability.
Beyond providing electricity, area co-ops invest in their communities through donations, volunteerism, and local programs. Co-op leaders say this month is a reminder that members aren’t just customers—they’re owners. Every member has a voice in how their cooperative is run, from the boardroom to day-to-day operations. Residents are encouraged to explore the benefits of co-op membership, from energy-saving tools to governance opportunities.
