
State Senator Claire Celsi has passed away after an illness prompting tributes from leaders across the state. Celsi, a Democrat, was first elected to the Senate in 2018 and re-elected in 2022. Her district included parts of West Des Moines, Clive, and Windsor Heights.
Governor Kim Reynolds praised Celsi as a passionate advocate who returned to the legislature this year despite battling illness. Reynolds, a Republican, said Celsi was an impassioned voice for her constituents. Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart also expressed condolences and remembered Celsi as a fierce advocate for public education, Iowa workers and as a mental health advocate.
Celsi had been in hospice since mid-September. She is remembered for her tireless work and heartfelt leadership. State Senator Claire Celsi was 59.
