Some of Iowa’s top volleyball talent will be on display at this week’s North Iowa Cedar League Tournament, which will begin Tuesday with the first round and quarterfinals.
#10 (2A) Aplington-Parkersburg will travel to #8 (1A) Gladbrook-Reinbeck. The hosts will play Oelwein in the first match, followed by the Falcons taking on #8 (2A) Sumner-Fredericksburg. AP coach Candace Kleespies says the tournament is great preparation for the postseason.
“It’s always fun, it’s always kind of crazy those two nights,” Kleespies says. “But it kind of gives you that NCAA feel. It’s fun for the girls to get to do that. Anybody that we play is pretty much going to help us. Like we told the girls, you have a chance Tuesday night that can help us with the brackets as they come out Thursday.”
AP’s matches will air on RadioOnTheGo’s YouTube channel, with the first serve scheduled for approximately 6:00 p.m.
#4 (2A) Grundy Center will host a pod, where they’ll take on Columbus Catholic and #2 (2A) Dike-New Hartford will play #15 (2A) Jesup. DNH coach Diane Harms expects it to be a wide open tournament.
“It’s going to be a battle,” Harms says. “It’ll be definitely a lot of fun. We have so much competition in the NICL, so just try to work on fine-tuning a few things so that we’re ready to go. We’ll just see who comes out on top.”
AGWSR will travel to #1 (2A) Denver, where they’ll play #9 (2A) Wapsie Valley and the hosts will take on East Marshall.
In the three-team pod, #13 (2A) Hudson will play South Hardin in a first round match at #5 (2A) Union, which will play the winner in the quarterfinal.
In the four-team pods, the hosts will play at 5:00, followed by the other first round match at 6:00. The consolations will follow at 7:00, and the quarterfinals will conclude the night at 8:00.
