Thomas Laehn Joins Growing Field in Iowa’s 2026 U.S. Senate Race

Thomas Laehn, Greene County Attorney and candidate for United States Senate

Greene County Attorney Thomas Laehn has announced his campaign for the U.S. Senate as a Libertarian. He’ll formally kick off his run this Saturday, October 11, at 10:30 a.m. at the State Historical Building in Des Moines. The event is open to the public. Laehn says he’s not running against Democrats or Republicans, but against the two-party system. He’s calling for campaign finance reform, stronger protections against eminent domain abuse, and limits on executive power.

Laehn made history in 2017 as the first Libertarian elected to partisan office in Iowa. He was re-elected Greene County Attorney in 2021.

The 2026 Senate race is shaping up to be competitive in both major parties, with at least two Republicans and five Democrats entering the race so far — though one Democrat has already dropped out.
