At approximately 8:57 a.m. Tuesday, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department responded to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Mallard Avenue and 70th Street, west of Bradford.
The crash involved a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic, driven by 19-year-old Carter Mikesell of Iowa Falls, who was traveling southbound on Mallard Avenue. A semi-truck and trailer, operated by Robert Halfpop of Belmond, was heading west on 70th Street when the collision occurred.
Franklin County Sheriff Aaron Dodd says Halfpop failed to see the oncoming car when he proceeded into the intersection from a stop and pulled into Mikesell’s path. Mikesell attempted to brake but was unable to avoid a collision and struck the rear wheels of the semi.
The Chevrolet sustained significant front-end damage, and all airbags deployed. The semi-truck received only minor damage to the rear wheels and rims.
Mikesell and his passenger, 18-year-old Lilianna Dillion of Alden, were evaluated at the scene by Franklin General Ambulance. Dillion was transported to Franklin General Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Mikesell did not require transport.
Halfpop was cited for entering a through highway from a controlled intersection.
