The Parkersburg City Council approved major spending for infrastructure and welcomed news of a large federal grant for the Fire Department during its meeting this week.

The Parkersburg Fire Department has secured a $171,000 grant from the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. Fire Chief Russ Boersma announced the award, which the Council unanimously accepted.

On the infrastructure front, the city approved over $53,000 for necessary repairs at the Main Lift Station, including the replacement of rotating assemblies on all three pumps. Meanwhile, ongoing street reconstruction projects faced some hurdles. The contractor for the Wemple Street Watermain Project formally requested a deadline extension, which the Council agreed to consider in the future. Separately, the contractor assured the Council that the Newell Avenue Reconstruction Project will be completed and open to traffic before winter.

The Parkersburg City Council also approved up to $1,000 to sponsor this year’s Jolly Jamboree celebration in December.
