The #2 (1A) Grundy Center football team will close the regular season by hosting Eagle Grove in the first-ever meeting between the programs Friday.
The Spartans (7-0, 4-0 1A-3) have clinched the district title, and would most likely secure homefield advantage through the quarterfinals with a win. They’re coming off a 55-0 win at Central Springs last week, their first shutout of the season. While the team played well, Head Coach Travis Zajac says the regular season finale provides an opportunity for a final tuneup.
“You really want to start accelerating,” Zajac says. “The play style should pop almost immediately. And we want to be efficient when we possess the ball. We want to sustain drives. We want to put points on the board, but we don’t want to put ourselves behind with penalties. And then defensively, we’ve got to be able to take away their key concepts that they want to run so we can hopefully create a three and out, short field for the offense. Then the special teams game, just making sure that that’s as tight as can be. We played well, but there’s still more out there for us to get better at. That’s going to be the focus this week against Eagle Grove. Celebrate our seniors, because it’s Senior Night for us. Excited to play at Spartan Stadium again and get ready to host a first round playoff game.”
Eagle Grove (2-5, 1-3 1A-3) has been eliminated from playoff contention. They picked up their first district win last week, 50-21 over Garner Hayfield Ventura, snapping a five-game losing streak.
The kickoff will be at 7:00 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.
