La Luz Centro Cultural in Hampton is asking for the community’s help to keep its doors open as the nonprofit faces declining funding.
Like many nonprofits, La Luz operates on a tight budget, relying on donations and grants. However, the organization says its funds are now dwindling, forcing staff hour reductions and limiting services. Intake specialists have been moved from full-time to part-time, meaning fewer clients can be served each week.
The center provides essential services such as community navigation, translation and interpretation, immigration assistance, and citizenship classes. Board members say these reductions are already being felt by the community members who depend on them.
In August alone, La Luz served more than 500 people, not including its year-round children’s programs. Leaders say their goal is to continue expanding offerings, including business and computer classes for adults, but that won’t be possible without additional support.
Donations will go directly toward operational costs. Contributions can be mailed to La Luz Centro Cultural at 7 2nd Ave NE in Hampton, or made through PayPal and Venmo using the QR codes found on the organization’s website or printed materials.
The center offers immigration and citizenship services, a bi-weekly food pantry, employment and notary assistance, and cultural events such as the annual Gran Festival.
