While much of Iowa has had a mild start to fall, cooler nights are beginning to settle in across the region. Des Moines just recorded its first sub-43-degree low of the season on Sunday — the third-latest on record. Here in northern Iowa, we’ve felt the chill a bit sooner. At the RadioOnTheGo studios in Hampton, overnight lows dipped below 40 degrees on three occasions this month: 38 on October 8th, and 39 degrees on both the 11th and 20th.
With highs falling and lows expected in the 30s this week, a widespread freeze is possible by midweek. While windy conditions are in today’s forecast, now might be the time to start prepping outdoor plants for colder weather ahead.
