Iowa’s state parks are preparing for colder weather as the fall camping season winds down. Facilities are being winterized across the state with shower houses closing, and water is being shut off at campgrounds. Campers can still enjoy the outdoors at a discount, with off-season rates in effect since October 16. Some parks also offer year-round cabins for overnight stays. Meanwhile, conservation officials say fall is prime time for river fishing in northeast Iowa. As water temperatures drop, fish like smallmouth bass, walleyes, and catfish become more active. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources recommends targeting deeper pools on rivers like the Cedar or Shell Rock. Fishing tips and river access info are available at iowadnr.gov/rivers.
