The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Office of Drug Control Policy is encouraging all Iowans to take part in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Saturday, October 25th. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., residents can safely and anonymously dispose of unused or expired medications at designated sites across the state.
This nationwide event, held twice a year, provides an easy way to get rid of leftover prescription and over-the-counter drugs, helping prevent misuse, accidental overdose and environmental harm. Law enforcement agencies and pharmacies will once again partner to collect medications during the one-day event.
In April’s Take Back Day, Iowans turned in more than 7,500 pounds of unneeded medicine. Since the program began, over 111 tons of unused medications have been collected across Iowa.
Permanent year-round drop-off sites are also available at more than 400 locations statewide. To find a nearby Take Back Day site or permanent drop box, visit dea.gov/takebackday or dps.iowa.gov.
