
The AGWSR volleyball team fought for a competitive first set but were unable to keep close for the remainder of the match falling 3-0 to St.Edmond in a Class 1A Region 8 quarterfinal on Wednesday, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ. The Gaels won by set scores of 25-22, 25-18, 25-15.
In the first set, there were seven ties including a tie at 20. The Gaels went on 5-1 run to secure the set win. In the second set, following a tie at 12, the Gaels outscored the Cougars 13-6 to claim a 2-0 advantage in the match. In the third set, with St.Edmond leading 10-7, the Gaels never trailed for the remainder of the set leading by as many as nine, to close out the win and advance. AGWSR Head Coach Kayla Miller.
“We knew what we were coming into. We knew we had to stop their middle hitter, who was number 14. We knew she was going to put the ball down. We knew she was going to tip a lot. Ultimately, that’s what she did tonight. We weren’t able to hold base. We weren’t able to get those tips. She got a lot of points on us by doing that,” says Miller. “We knew it was going to be a good game. We knew we would be able to play aggressively. At the end of the day, it just came down to who wanted it more.”
Brylea Metzgar had 17 kills and Hadley Bright added seven to lead the Cougars.
This was the final match for six AGWSR seniors. The Cougars concluded their season at 7-30 overall.
